I'd Say A Lot's Been Going On...
Jan. 4th, 2006 01:08 am...but it hasn't. Hence my not updating.
Chris' visit was a pleasing, if drunken experience. He turned up at half twelve on the Friday, and we drank through the afternoon, evening, meal and night, finally finishing well over twelve hours later and feeling considerably better than we had expected. Must have been the company. As a side note - I recommend this to wine drinkers who want something light and red without any bitterness or sediment whatsoever. I drank it for the second time at the pub restaurant we went to, and while it's not cheap it's absolutely wonderful. Well worth the price.
The new year passed the way I like it doing so - just the family, at home, bottle of Lanson, all good. We don't set a great deal of store in the turning of the year, it seems - that, or we try to keep things more in perspective than the hosts of drunken assholes who were seen parading through the streets of major cities before, during and after the stroke of midnight.
I will say, however, that the firework display in London centered around the Eye was simply magnificent. It was well designed with commentary, and made good use of the architectural features on offer. It also sent up over thirty-three thousand shots in just over ten minutes - which was also a plus. I preferred sitting at home, enjoying a drink and watching it on TV than going out anywhere or partying through the night. Am I strange in thinking that the turn of the new year isn't the excuse for a fresh slate that some people claim it to be?
Upon returning to Bath, I have been imbued with a desire to create ice cream and sorbet. The mint chocolate is currently in the freezer, the apple and mango is getting done tomorrow night, and its sister sorbet will be done once the churn has recovered from those two.
Does anyone local to here have access to the Nine Inch Nails recording of Hurt? I heard Johnny Cash's version over Christmas and think it's fantastic, and would like to hear the original, even though it's writer even claims that it is no longer his song - it's Cash's. The same goes for Aerosmith and Dream On - it was covered by Kathy Fisher, one of my very favourite artists - and while I think it sounds great, I'd like to hear how it was originally done as well.
Is it really precocious to bring out a new set of dice for every new tabletop character? I only play two tabletop games on a regular basis and the cost isn't that great - it's just met with incedulity from everyone who finds out. So what, I want to bring out chrome plated dice for my next Shadowrun character? I'm going to write several thousands of words of backplot for him (Emma's backstory for Afina is really quite inspiring), spend days creating large numbers of contacts, and nearly give myself a schizophrenic episode playing him. I try to make every character I play as three-dimensional as I can - I think it's only fitting that he should have his own dice. Is that so wrong?
It occurs to me that I'm throwing forward random opinions and comment in attempt to fill up space, so I'll stop. I'm not going to do a 2005 year in review, because I sort of feel that if you're that interested, the journal is here and free to read. That's why we write, after all.
