...and for fifteen minutes yesterday, I had no idea what I was saying.

Steve recently ran a discussion on his LJ where the concept of getting so deeply IC that their character acted independently of the player was discussed. As it was put there, "while I was watching, I wasn't driving". When it happens to me, I know of it by having a hazy section of memory surrounding the action. Until yesterday, there were only three times I'd managed this particularly enlightened state:

Playing Trillian Mistwalker for the first time, particular event sparked by a short piece of conversation with Outcast.
Playing Jud Fry in Oklahoma, while I sang Lonely Room.
Playing Rhinyn on the recent scouting mission to Sonalista.

Yesterday, while giving my PhD final year talk, I did it again. I kicked back and relaxed as someone with my voice gave an almost flawlessly unstuttering talk using my mouth - or at least that's what it felt like.

The rehearsal had been mediocre, my having been clocked at well over twenty minutes rather than the required fifteen, and I knew I had more slides than then and had to get on with it. From the moment I started the proper one, however, it was like I was driving a very fast car in a stright line: If the wheel turned, I was going to roll, crash and burn. Very strange feeling.

According to sources, it went really quite well, though I put in a few too many light-hearted asides. I can live with that.

As everyone was around last night, Jon ran an impromptu Warhammer session. It turned into a bit of a nightmare for several people, as while I can't condone some of Felix's actions (telling another character to shush IC while she was trying to roleplay is a bit of a downer, especially as she had something reasonable to say), everyone reacted to being under suspicion of murder very differently. Pieter was the arresting officer, so he was in the clear; Felix made sure he looked like he was in charge...as usual...even though he was prime suspect; Mel seemed not to know what was going on, which is par for the course for her; Ali kept trying to help but got told to shut up by the great and glorious leader Felix on several occasions; and Alaina curled up in a corner and hoped it all went away.

When all was said and done, they got off, and have just dropped into the sewer - backed by several members of the Middenheim watch - to go and dungeon crawl a skaven hideout. It'll be nice to go on a mission on almost full hits for once.

...my girlfriend just came second in the University creative writing competition.

I love her so very, very much.

Edit: I should point out that James (Heinous) Harper won first prize, making it a BLADES one-two. Pause for applause.
