So, You're In the Office...
Feb. 7th, 2007 10:41 pm...and your manager comes over to you.
He talks to you about what you expect from the two day event in Bristol tomorrow and Friday, where everyone in the area who does the job you do is coming together to brainstorm over how to iron out creases in working practices, before presenting the proposals to a management panel (of which he is part), who respond with "Yes, within thirty days" or "No, because..." only.
He discusses how a temp like you are may indeed, as you put it, find it difficult to know where you stand in relation to what is happening, as you are only partially trained in the work, are only here for a few months, and don't know everything there is to know about the job.
He then discusses how he got to where he was, and how he enjoyed what he was selected to do on the way there, but how he always thought the managers were slightly aloof, and remain that way today. Then he gets someone to do a little more traning with you.
Part of my mind wanted it to be just a random chat, a good manager checking on his staff. However, for better or worse, my mind isn't like that. My mind kept asking me if my manager had just verified that I had nothing particular to put my name to the event, and told me what he wanted me to bring up on his behalf, as he wasn't able to himself.
So, tomorrow I will be harping on about management visibility, lines of communication, the personality interface and further marrying the grade boundaries. I don't have any business studies qualifications, and I'm only here for a fixed term (until the end of October). Did he pick me in case I said something that wasn't the party line so could be thrown out easier?
