Regarding the smoking ban, I'd have been right with you if they'd left in the provision that allowed private member's clubs to remain smoking if they wished. I can understand banning smoking in truly public spaces, but preventing people in a club in which all members are by definition smokers from smoking (which this law does) seems to me to have left any kind of reason far in its wake.
