...my week's been pretty full.

SLA on Saturday got off to a stuttering, if fun start. I'd flag up my highlight of the evening as the moment Tim's character used telekinesis to carefully manipulate the key holding a door we were trying to get through safely locked from the inside, pushing it out of the lock, dropping it soundlessly to the floor, pulling it under the door and presenting it to my character in an attempt to stop me from blasting the shit out of the lock with my 50 calibre hand cannon, all the while trained on the handle. I thanked him profusely and pulled the trigger. Hot damn, I'm a badass.

Sunday's LARP involved Nimbus being sick. Slightly twisted too. For once I was pleased with my portrayal, given the level and type of cloud cover and his reactions to the situations presented to him. The last time there were cirrus clouds I didn't think I made enough of it, but this time enough stuff went off that I'm happy he was different enough to the norm that people may have noticed.
Having tested just about all of the different cloud types for viability, I think the character concept can work, and the internal monologue is certainly there, but it needs some bulking out and further definition as far as acts committed under different types of sky are concerned. Drifting into generic Nimbus must be avoided - that would make him as boring as he looks.

On Tuesday, Emma and I went to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Hippodrome, courtesy (quite literally) of Elizabeth. As a member of the crew, she had four comps to give away, and we got our hands on a pair. The production was possibly better than the film, which is probably the highest compliment I can give it, considering that the film - for its time - was utterly sublime. The stagecraft required to lift a full sized car, compete with people, up into the air and throw it around the stage, without giving away any hints as to how it was done (hydraulic rams, for those who are interested) is awesome. Right up along with that barricade, and before health and safety intervened, that chandelier. It was worth watching for that alone, the great performances being nothing more than a bonus - which possibly means it doesn't fit into the category of the absolute greats, but it's still a fun way to spend an evening.

And finally...

This evening, I received an email from Catherine re: a new LARP system she and a fair chunk of the Tarantulas plot team are in charge of, called Shadow Wars - a near-future, Shadowrun style game, using both LARP weapons and airsoft guns.

As I read this email, three words started to drift round my mind, like an old friend slowly appearing from a distance. Someone I knew well in the past and never wanted to lose touch with, but who had unavoidably drifted, always wanting to return.

It's currently invite only (hell, I was lucky), and involves the player party taking on the roles of mercenaries given an objective by one of six megacorps that control the world more than governments do.

The words became more and more well defined, and started a little dance of their own accord as I read the background, a wild joy inherent in every movement, every breath. By the end of it, they were screaming their name for all the world to hear, as mad, bad and dangerous to know as that which they described. Three words that inspire fear, loathing, disdain, hatred or otherwise crass and well-earned negativity among all those who have encountered them, but who are indelibly etched on the memory of everyone to whom they have been introduced.

Those words marked some of the most fun I have ever had round a table, and will be coming out to play, all over again - and this time, they're going live.
