...is the only way I can describe today.
Today, I was told that the management could no longer ignore the pressure being put on them from higher up, and unless something changed in my sales output by the end of July, I'd have to go on a PIP (a performance improvement plan - a big beating stick with a disciplinary hearing at the end if unsuccessful).
This has been in the offing for a long time, and in truth, I'm surprised I've survived this long. I know how to do just about everything that isn't selling (computer literacy, product knowledge, process knowledge, customer liaison, letter writing, and that's no more than half of things) better than everyone else in the branch, yet none of these things have KPIs attached to them, and my sales figures, to put it bluntly, are crap (as a result of doing all of the above for everyone else, and being crap at asking every customer if they want home insurance).
On the same day, I have had someone several grades above my senior branch manager call him and ask after my availability for a secondment to his team at head office as a lead analyst in procurement. This would involve a salary increase of between 100 and 150%. He's unsure he can release me (it depends on if he can recruit someone for my position), but if he could, after being asked for by name and with the SBM knowing the interviewer personally, I'd say there was a fair chance.
On the same day, a scientific company (not going to mention them just yet in case they get confidential on me) contacted me and invited me to interview for their intrumentation trainer role, as one of four candidates. This would involve a salary increase of between 60 and 110%, and I would be setting up and demonstrating kit attached to XRD machines that I happen to have used during my PhD in locations all over the world (America, Europe and Asia specifically mentioned). It also represents the first scientific interview I have been invited for in over a year.
On the same day, logical access in the information security department up at NH offered me an interview for another secondment, to their analytical team making sure that everyone has the right access priveliges. This would involve a salary increase of between 60 and 95%.
Yesterday, an IFA in Trowbridge who is advising Emma's company on their pensions commiserated over my current position, took my CV off me and sent it to his manager who is recruiting technical assistants with a view to making them financial paraplanners (think paralegals, but financial rather than legal). This would involve an initial salary increase of between 20 and 60%.
I guess the next month will tell me if I have any worth in the world of work. One of these, any one of these, would do nicely.
The downside is I haven't the faintest idea what I will do if they all fall through.
