Now I Have A Car...
Oct. 4th, 2010 09:53 am...we nearly have a house.
Emma and I were in Cirencester on Saturday morning to look at a couple of properties that were just about inside our price range. The first one, in South Cerney just south of the city itself, was in a truly beautiful little village...and was a shed. A large, stone walled, draughty, empty shed.
Well bugger, we thought. This is what we're going to get.
The next one, however, was something quite different. Cirencester has an old town centre that looks really rather like (for those who live there) Bath's city centre from M&S north west as far as the Guildhall. That little area of courtyards and pokey lanes is an extremely pleasant place to wander around in, and the second flat we looked at was about fifty yards away from it. It's a pretty recent conversion of a derelict mill (the erstwhile mill race runs through the back garden), so all the fittings are very new and shiny. It's about thirty percent bigger than what we're in now (which, to be fair to it, is no bigger than a large mobile home), and all the rooms are pleasantly square (if you've seen our bedroom or kitchen, you'll understand).
Excellent, we thought. We'll have some of that.
I emailed the agents on Saturday to say yes, and called them this morning to confirm, to be told that another offer had been made on Friday, but she'd call the landlord and see what they said.
Otherwise known as too late, mf.
The thought of suggesting that if I could have the other couple's names and addresses, and twenty four hours, it would cease to be an issue did cross my mind, but instead I kept that in check and made us sound as grown up and cool as possible. I doubt it's going to do much good though, and I don't blame the other couple for wanting it - it's lovely. I just hope they both happen to be unemployed smokers with a history of bad references and shoddy credit.
Fingers crossed...
