It's Really Happening...

...I'm really going to San Francisco.
This morning, the confirmation that my paper had been accepted came through from the conference organisers, so now they're expecting me to turn up in September with a poster and attend. Even better, Emma is coming with me, and we're going to have a couple of days sightseeing before the conference begins.
Let me be the first (and possibly only) to say...holy shit. I just became a professional chemist.
Currently hearing from all sides that Locko Park is a quagmire just in time for the Heartlands, with more rain forecast until Sunday. Here's hoping for some high ground still being available come quarter to three on Friday afternoon. Chances - slim.
Does anyone have any idea how to minimise the number of active connections in a house network? The proxy set-up we're using at the moment (a heap of junk powered off a USB modem, but we only have to put up with it until the end of June) only allows two simultaneous connections, and despite closing browser windows and signing out of messenger when not at the computer, we're struggling to have anyone online at all, and that means no EQ2 making Doug a dull boy. Are there any passive users of network traffic that are being overlooked? Does ZoneAlarm consistently communicate? Live Updates?

DisclaimerI'm just guessing here, so don't do anything without asking someone who actually knows.
