...the Eurovision Song Contest is on tomorrow night at 8pm.

It is typical that the winning band from the previous year open the contest, performing something of their own that reminds people who they are. This means Lordi will probably be opening a can of their own brand of whoopass at about three minutes past, to be finished before the first song in the contest at about ten past. You can be switched over before quarter past and not have your cool interrupted too much by the fact you've been watching ESC for a whole quarter of an hour.

A few of us, however, will be watching as we always have. Well, since 1992 at least.

To those who may be undecided on whether to bother, maybe haven't before, and think that it's purely a joke, I urge you - try it. Just once. There is no question whatsoever that the British entry is going to go down like a xenon baloon this year, so there's no need to get any patriotic feeling about it, just sit back and watch.

Shaun once described watching anime to me as like panning for gold: you sift through lorryloads of crap until you find what you're looking for, and then you enjoy it. I submit that watching the Eurovision song contest is the same. There is quite a lot of drivel, and Terry Wogan to boot, to get through, but once in a while something truly worth listening to comes along. It happens about once or twice a year - about the same rate that it happens in the UK charts - and when it does, you can sit back and realise that while everyone else is calling you a sad bastard for sitting by the river with a pan all day long, you're the only one holding this little piece of pure, solid gold in your hand.

It's worth it.

While it may against all of your sensibilities, common sense and presumed knowledge, try it. Tomorrow night, take three-odd hours out to sit down with a beverage of choice in front of the TV and pan for your own gold.

If I were a betting man, I'd put money on you finding at least one song you quite like.

I was invited to a Eurovision party this year. Due to staff, I won't be attending.
And I remember my year in Bristol, I worked Eurovision night.
But one year, not only will I watch it, but I shall watch it with you.

And dude, I love Terry Wogan.

You didn't miss much in Bristol. Paul and I were watching, and in the break I played him the track that lost out to Cry Baby in the UK Song for Europe contest. He was as incredulous as I was.

The very same, door holding, stab-the-dartboard-like-it-owes-you-money, knife toting maniac himself. As big a Eurovision fan as me.

I always loved the way Terry Wogan will spend the whole year taking the piss out of ESC at every opertunity despite the fact that he hosts it

Now he's been stopped from talking over the performances, I appreciate him once again.

A fraction of the time lost, more capacity to go "hey, I liked that, let's hear that again", no dire ads for random countries.
Internet 1 TV 0.

The sound quality is dire, and you miss the spectacle. Some of the camerawork is truly surreal.
