...I give you Flame Warriors. For relief and reassurance you are not, in fact, at fault, I suggest logging in and seeing how many types you can spot.

I've been strongly put forward for a twelve month post in Barry, working in the research labs for the company that co-sponsored my PhD. If I am offered the post, I'll get paid £30,000 or so for the year. This is more money than my parents wages combined, and moderately disturbing.
I don't want to move out of Bath, away from Emma, regular roleplay games and the vast majority of people I enjoy spending time with, but thirty thousand pounds is sick money. I don't care if you earn more, or know someone who earns more. I still call it sick money.
____________

I really don't want my next character to show up at the Gathering only to be slotted within five minutes of time in because he comes from Mauritanja. I wonder what combination of who's actions (as if I couldn't guess) lead me to having to worry about my character's safety from other characters, rather than from the actual bad guys - you know, the ones that come out of the monster room that we're SUPPOSED to be fighting against.

To those very people, who I doubt are reading, but might be - this is a public journal, after all - thank you. Thank you so very much for turning that particular world to glass for the forseeable future. I'm not allowed to complain, because that isn't the done thing, so I'll just sit here and think it instead.
____________

Steve and Greg have started making noises (quietly) about next year's campaign. This, in turn, explains to me why I'm so pissed off about going IC at the LT being so dangerous - the level of excitement that is instilled in me at playing Rhinyn v2 obviously comes from the memories I have of playing Rhinyn v1, and I know that for a fair emount of time, I won't be getting that at the LT as I'll be looking over my shoulder every ten seconds.

Still, I get Rhinyn v2, in a situation that is probably as well suited to him as I could have hoped for (despite what I hear about some of the campaign ideas that were not picked), and now all I need is a means to be in Bath every weekend to play him.

£30,000 would pay for the train tickets, at least.

You've hit upon my main bugbear with the LT. I hate PvP. I hate the fact that a group of people can decide on a whim that they want to be complete arseholes for no reason and kill my character because they think it's funny. Oh, they'll make up some random "we're roleplaying mass murderer's" excuse, but as far as I'm concerned, it's playground bullying taken up a few years. I love the sanctioned events, where we fight monsters. I love the plot at sanctioned events. It may not all be suited to what I want to do, but it's there if I choose to get involved with it.

but as far as I'm concerned - PvP - not needed. I know people disagree with me, but that's there view.

Even though, in principle, I see where you're coming from, I can't agree that PvP shouldn't be in the system. I dislike not being able to do anything without a good IC reason. To have every single character in the system unwilling to commit murder would be too far out there even for my tastes. Unless it was impossible to penetrate the ritual of peace. Now there's an idea...

Until then...
"This character has slaughtered my family. I want to kill this character."
"You can't."
"Why not?"
"Umm...shut up. Incoming."

No thanks.

£30k is excellent money. I know people who earn more and who earn less, but the only way I think of it is in terms of how much more than you need to live on is it?
My congratulations on the possibility alone!

...

LT - let's have a chat. I persist in happily wandering around LT events without any qualms. Of the times I've met an unsightly end, one was when the faction declared me Faction Champion and then gave me a Permanent Silver Sword, and then I chose to wander alone through muggers alley in the dark between where everyone knew the Unicorns would be and the Unicorns camp. *shrug* Who's to blame in that scenario?
The other - StormClaw was ostensibly on the Tarantula "assassinate when the opportunity presents itself" list for over two years and I didn't exactly cut back on risks. In the end, the opportunity came up, but again I went looking for it in the dark and knew I was doing it.
I don't know what kind of PC you're planning on playing, but I'm trying to put a bit more group into the group atm, just to see if it can be done, and would like the opportunity to talk you into it.

I'd love to discuss it with you, but I feel that what I have in mind has now been in preparation for so long (mainly as situation rehearsal to get under the character's skin rather rather than writing backstory), that it may well be too intractable to fit in to anything else.

That said, I'd still be interested to hear what you have in mind.

From reading the Trannies boards they seem more bothered about the thing with Andy B than hitting any more Unicorns. I think they feel that they've exacted their retribution for the GEF attack and will be leaving it there. Any further provocation will probably see them out hunting again tho, and no, they don't generally care who they get, which is utterly annoying. Getting killed cos someone who's in your faction was an idiot? Not anyone's idea of fun, I would think.

That's a shame. Because the GEF attak was "retribution" for them killing Mordakai. And so it continues. Vengeance killing on vengeance killing. Half the faction don't want this but we'll get it anyway... Might as well move to sodding Northern Ireland.

Aaah, I didn't know that bit. Oh sod. Murder merry go round then. Glad I'm a lovely viper now...

And unless I'm much mistaken, that was retribution for rolling them at the Gathering, which was retribution for them rolling us the day before at the Gathering, which was...

Someone does need to step off the merry go round first, but that's really hard to do as the whole faction has to admit defeat to do it. And admitting defeat is a very, very depressing thing.

In my day we used to have diplomats. Tended to get in the way of all those sword-bunnies who only wanted to mosh, though. Several years the main battle almost didn't take place because everyone decided to be reasonable until the NPCs were ordered to refuse to accept peace terms. I think the peacemakers pretty much gave up at that point.

That's one advantage of Maelstrom - players have just as much chance of creating peace as they have of creating war. No interventions from the organiser to force players down a route they aren't happy with.

Diplomats - we still have those. They're pretty good at it. Unfortunately, those who the LT have dictated make the decisions are always rattling the Hornblade too loud to hear that the problem is solved and if they'd just stop being so fucking arrogant for a moment we wouldn't all need to die.

I have the same misgivings about the gathering, At least I'm not really bothered whether the character lives or dies.

When will the job start if you get the place?

Whenever - still got to be offered an interview yet, if they're interested in me at all. Would be some time in the next few months, though.

Congrats on the job op. It's onscene money, nut about par for the course for a graduate, I am told. And it sounds like you'll be doing something relateed to your degree? If so, take it, do take it, because that is so very rare.

Yes, we have Certain Someone to thank, but it's being dealt with. I don't know the details, I don't want to, but I said the same thing to someone and they said not to worry too much.

"Not to worry too much" as in "Yes, this time we're going to fix them the problem", or "*pat pat* don't worry, little girlie, us big boys will sort it out for you"?

Someone I trust promising it will be sorted.

That's a most refreshing change, as long as it comes to fruition.
